Keep the buying action close—not in the way.
A sticky add-to-cart bar should continue the current product decision after the main form leaves view. It must preserve the selected variant and required information, and it must never cover content or other essential controls.
- Choose the variant
- Leave the main form
- Keep context visible
- Confirm the same item
Use persistence where the page needs it
A long product page can separate the explanation from the buying action. A compact sticky bar can make the next step easier to find, but it should not appear simply because it is available. On a short product page the original form may already be close enough. Compare both states with your real content before deciding.
The Ecomfella source contains a sticky add-to-cart implementation. The general product capture here shows the main buying area, not proof of every sticky state. Confirm the behaviour on your selected release in the real product demo, including any selling-plan or personalisation integration you require.
One selection must remain one selection
Choose a different variant in the main form and inspect the sticky bar. The image, price, availability and submitted variant must agree. A bar that adds the default option after a shopper selects another is worse than having no bar. Required fields must not be silently discarded by the second control.
If the bar cannot represent the full decision safely, its action can return the shopper to the original form instead of submitting an incomplete order. This is especially important for engraving, subscriptions or product configurations supplied by another app. The theme presentation does not replace those systems.
- Change size, colour and quantity before scrolling.
- Test sold-out and unavailable combinations.
- Verify compare-at price and discount display.
- Confirm the actual cart line after adding.
Reserve room on a phone
Cookie controls, chat launchers, browser chrome and sticky purchase bars often compete for the same edge. Test them together. Product text, size guidance and the final footer links must remain reachable, and a keyboard opened by an input should not trap the screen behind stacked fixed elements.
Keep the bar readable rather than squeezing every product detail into it. A clear selected option and action are more useful than several tiny badges. Check 320-pixel layouts and intermediate tablet widths, not only your own phone.
Measure the whole buying flow
A visible button is not evidence of a conversion increase. Establish that the interaction is correct first: submit once, show an honest loading state, handle a failed add without pretending it succeeded, and restore usable controls. Inspect the resulting cart quantity and variant, then proceed to checkout without placing a real order during QA.
Only compare commercial outcomes after you have enough consented, relevant traffic and a stable experiment. No fixed uplift is promised by this guide. Keep the simpler presentation if the persistent bar obscures choices or creates more errors.
- Use keyboard as well as touch.
- Test reduced motion.
- Repeat with cart drawers and app widgets enabled.
- Keep the main form usable if enhancement code fails.

Questions before you decide
Will a sticky bar automatically increase conversion?
No. Correct behaviour and a measured experiment are needed; visibility alone is not a result.
Is the sticky bar a second cart?
It should not be. It must submit the same intended product selection to Shopify or return the user to the main form.
