Dawn vs Horizon: which free Shopify theme should you start on?

Start on Horizon if you are building a new store today: it has the newer editor model, more flexible blocks and the same zero price. Stay on Dawn if your store already runs on it and works. Both are honest, fast foundations, and both run out at the same point: the moment you want a sticky buy button, a cart with a progress bar, bundles or trust blocks, you are installing apps, and within a year the app bill passes what a paid theme costs.

Who wrote this

Ecomfella wrote this page and Ecomfella sells a paid theme, so we have an interest in the answer to the last question on it. The comparison between Dawn and Horizon themselves is as straight as we can make it, because we recommend both as starting points and mean it. Where we describe the limits of free themes, we describe the limits of every theme with a short section list, including paid ones.

We have not published counts for Dawn and Horizon the way we have for Impulse and Prestige; the assessment here is from the public Theme Store listings and the demos on the dates shown in the sources.

Dawn: the reference, still a fine start

Dawn is the theme every other Shopify theme is measured against. It is fast, stable, well documented and free, and for years it was the default new store. It has mega menus, filtering, product options and recommended products, so it is not bare. It is minimal by design, and that design is honest: it does the fundamentals well and leaves everything else to you.

Its weakness is simply what it does not include. Every mechanic beyond the basics, from a sticky buy button to a cart upsell to a review grid, becomes an app. Each app adds a script to the page, a monthly fee and a small visual inconsistency. If your store already runs on Dawn and works, there is no reason to move for its own sake.

Horizon: the newer generation

Horizon is Shopify’s newest free foundation and it is the better starting point for a store built today. The editor model is cleaner, blocks nest more flexibly, and the presets give a new store a more finished look out of the box than Dawn does. Performance is solid and it is, of course, free.

The limits are the same in kind as Dawn’s, just slightly further out. The section list is short next to any paid theme, the product page is thin for a complicated catalogue, and the cart is a drawer rather than a design. Expect apps, and expect the app bill to start earlier than you planned.

When free stops being cheaper

Keep a list of every app you add on either theme, with its monthly price. The list will typically hold a sticky add to cart, a cart upsell or progress bar, a review app, a bundle app and some kind of announcement or timer within the first months. When the monthly total passes what a one-time paid theme costs, free has stopped being cheaper, and the apps are still not yours.

That is the point at which a theme that ships those mechanics natively, in one visual system, starts to make financial sense. Ecomfella is built for exactly that moment, with ten cart directions, sticky buying controls, bundles, stock and trust blocks and ten proof sections in the theme, and our comparison against paid themes shows the counts. Impulse and Prestige are the established alternatives. Whichever you consider, count the apps first.

  • Start on Horizon for a new store, stay on Dawn if it works.
  • List every app you add, with its monthly price.
  • When the app total passes a paid theme, compare paid themes on what they ship natively.

Questions before you decide

Is Horizon better than Dawn?

For a new store, yes: newer editor model, more flexible blocks, better presets, same zero price. For an existing Dawn store that works, there is no reason to move for its own sake.

Can I stay on a free theme forever?

Yes, if your store stays simple. Most stores add apps for the cart, buying controls, reviews and bundles, and the combined monthly cost eventually passes a one-time paid theme.

Which paid theme should I move to from Dawn or Horizon?

One that ships the mechanics you were installing as apps. Our ranking of the best Shopify themes and the Dawn versus premium guide walk through the choice.
